Christian said, “Be content, good neighbors, and go along with me.”
“What,” said Obstinate, “and leave our friends and our comforts behind us!”
“Yes,” (Now claiming the pilgrim name of Christian) “because that all which you forsake is not worthy to be compared with a little of that I am seeking to enjoy (Rom. 8:18, 2 Cor. 4:18), and if you will go along with me, and hold it, you shall fare as I myself; for there, where I go, is enough and to spare (Luke 15:17). Come away, and prove my words.”
“What are the things you seek, since you leave all the world to find them?”
“I seek an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and does not fade away (1 Peter 1:4), and it is laid up in heaven, and safe there (Heb. 11:16), to be bestowed, at the time appointed, on them that diligently seek it. Read it so, if you will, in my book.”
“Tush,” said Obstinate, “away with your book; will you go back with us or no?”
“No, not I,” said Christian, “because I have laid my hand to the plough [and will not look back]” (Luke 9:62).
John Bunyan, The Pilgrim’s Progress
- What do you think of the arguments and line of questioning that Obstinate has towards Pilgrim and his departing?
- Do you think the Christian’s responses to Obstinate was enough to convince Obstinate to go with him? Why or why not?
- Are you willing to ask yourself, honestly, if you have at this time “Laid your hand to the plough” and will not look back?
“By perseverence the snail reached the ark.” – Charles Spurgeon
Christian had set his hand to the plough, so even if he moved at a snail’s pace, he would come to the end of the King’s Highway, cross over the waters of the Deep River and go into the Celestial City into the presence of his King. Will you have such perseverence?
