Weekly Bible Reading – Intro
I’m excited that you have decided to join us on this trip through the Bible. As we are in this interesting week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, it could be a good time for you to think about your plan for how you will meet this goal of reading through the Bible with us this year. Below you will find lots of links to resources including the first couple of days of readings.
It is my goal to get these weekly updates out to you every Friday so you are ready to start your week and you have one place to go to find all of the readings and additional resources. Obviously, if you use different tools or accounts to listen to podcasts, we are available there too. If you have any questions, just throw them in the comments below or chat with me in person and I would be happy to help.
As I mentioned before, this podcast was originally started back in 2021, so the audio quality isn’t great on some of the first episodes as I got things going but feel free to listen to some of the introductory episodes that I created back then.
Prep Resources
This is the original announcement from December 28, 2020. The reading plan that we will be using is available in a printed form at the church or you can get a copy here as well.
This might seem like a no-brainer to those of us who have been in church forever, but for many people this is the biggest question. Why is the Bible important? Isn’t it just an old dusty book? What importance could it possibly have for me today?
I pray a very similar prayer at the beginning of each episode and that prayer comes from Chapter 9 of John Piper’s “When I Don’t Desire God.” The prayer is 4 verse from the Psalms:
- Incline my heart to you, not to prideful gain or any false motive. (Psalm 119:36)
- Open my eyes to behold wonderful things in your Word. (Psalm 119:18)
- Unite my heart to fear your name. (Psalm 86:11)
- Satisfy me with your steadfast love. (Psalm 90:14)
Begin The Journey
Day 1 – Genesis 1-3: In this opening episode, we see the heights of Creation come crashing into the depths of the Fall of humanity into sin. This is the opening narration of the story which will be repeated throughout the Old Testament. That God had created everything good and perfect and man has corrupted that creation. However, even in the midst of this corruption, God is promising to put an end to the stain of sin and evil.
Day 2 – Genesis 4-7: After Adam and Eve’s exile, sin spreads quickly as Cain murders Abel, humanity multiplies in corruption and violence, and even the line meant to preserve God’s promise becomes entangled with wickedness. Grieved by the depth of human evil, God brings judgment through the flood while preserving Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark, showing both His righteous justice and His mercy in sustaining life.
Day 3 – Genesis 8-11: After the flood, God restores the earth, establishes a covenant with Noah marked by the rainbow, and reaffirms His commitment to preserve life and the order of creation. As humanity once again unites in pride at Babel to make a name for itself, God scatters the nations by confusing their languages, setting the stage for His redemptive plan to bless the world through one chosen family.
