Always Pray and Do Not Lose Heart

In Luke 18:1–8, Jesus tells the parable of a persistent widow who kept coming to an unjust judge until he finally granted her request. Luke introduces the parable with a clear purpose:

“And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1, ESV)

If even an unjust judge eventually relents, how much more will our righteous Father hear the cries of His children? Jesus assures us:

“Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.” (Luke 18:7–8, ESV)

And yet the parable ends with a searching question:

“Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8, ESV)

This is the challenge before us. It is not enough to simply pray once or serve once. Will we be found faithful, persistently trusting God, persistently calling on Him, persistently living in His kingdom until the day Christ returns?

Persistent Faith

Pray without ceasing. True faith expresses itself in prayer. Every time we go to God, we confess that He alone has the power to act, to save, to change hearts. Trust His promises. The Scriptures assure us that God hears the prayers of His people (1 John 5:14–15). To live by faith is to take Him at His Word, even when answers are delayed, even when the harvest seems far off. Live faithfully with what He has given. Jesus’ question about finding faith is not abstract. It presses us to examine whether we are investing the opportunities, relationships, and resources entrusted to us into His kingdom.

A Challenge For Us

As a church, we have been given much. Children to love and encourage. Neighbors to reach. Opportunities to shine the light of Christ in our community. The question is not whether God will be faithful. He always is. The question is: Will we?

When the Son of Man comes, will He find us faithful in prayer? Faithful in discipleship? Faithful in serving one another and proclaiming His name?

Let’s commit together to be a church that does not lose heart, a people who persevere in prayer and action, longing for the day when we will hear Him say:

“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:23, ESV)
