Fourth Watch

Fridays at 4:00 AM

There are easier times to meet. That is part of the point.

Fourth Watch is a weekly gathering of men who are willing to get out of bed before the rest of the world wakes up, open the Scriptures, pray together, and challenge one another to follow Jesus faithfully.

We are not meeting at 4:00 AM because God is more impressed with prayers offered before sunrise. We are not trying to prove how tough or spiritual we are. We meet early because most men already have crowded lives. Work, children, responsibilities, practices, projects, and everything else quickly fill the calendar.

At four in the morning, almost nothing is competing for your attention. So we give that hour to God.

WHY “FOURTH WATCH”?

In the ancient world, the night was divided into watches. The fourth watch was the final stretch of darkness before sunrise, roughly between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning. It was during the fourth watch that Jesus came walking across the water toward His disciples.

“And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.” – Matthew 14:25

The disciples were exhausted, frightened, and struggling against the wind. Jesus came to them in the darkness and said: “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” That is the heart behind Fourth Watch. Before the noise of the day begins, we want to learn to watch for Christ.

WHAT ARE WE WATCHING?

Watch for the Lord.

We want to become men who expect God to act, recognize His work, listen to His Word, and eagerly await the return of Christ. Before we start watching our phones, our schedules, the news, or everything demanding our attention, we want to turn our eyes toward Jesus.

Watch your heart.

Men are remarkably good at hiding. We can stay busy, provide for our families, attend church, crack jokes, and convince everyone around us that everything is fine while pride, anger, lust, fear, bitterness, laziness, or unbelief quietly grows underneath the surface. Fourth Watch is a place to stop hiding and learn to pay attention to what is happening in our own souls.

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” – Proverbs 4:23

Watch your brothers.

Christian men were never meant to fight alone. We need brothers who will encourage us when we are tired, confront us when we are wandering, pray for us when we are hurting, and remind us of the gospel when we forget. We want to become the kind of men who can say: I have your back, and I expect you to have mine.

Watch your family.

God has placed people in our care. For some men that means a wife and children. For others it means parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or younger believers who are watching their example. We want to become men who are spiritually awake, men who pray for their homes, notice what is happening around them, lead through service, repent quickly, love sacrificially, and point the people entrusted to us toward Christ.

WHAT HAPPENS AT FOURTH WATCH?

Nothing complicated. We gather. We open the Bible. We talk honestly. We pray. And then we go live it.

Fourth Watch is not a polished church program. There is no need to impress anyone. You do not need to have your life together, know all the answers, or be comfortable praying out loud. Bring yourself. Bring a Bible. Leave your pillow behind, and come ready to seek the Lord.

WHY SO EARLY?

Because following Jesus costs something. Our culture teaches us to arrange life around convenience. Jesus repeatedly calls His disciples to something deeper. Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Me. Getting out of bed at 3-something in the morning will not make you holy. But voluntarily choosing discomfort can expose just how much our lives are controlled by comfort.

WHO SHOULD COME?

Fourth Watch is for men who want to follow Jesus. Strong men who know they are weak. Men who have followed Christ for decades and men who are just beginning. Men who lead families and men who live alone. Men who know Scripture well and men who are still figuring out where the books of the Bible are. You don’t need to pretend. You just need to come willing to seek Christ alongside other men.

This is not about becoming tougher men, it is about becoming faithful men. Men who pray. Men who repent. Men who keep their word. Men who love their wives. Men who shepherd their children. Men who serve the church. Men who resist temptation. Men who carry one another’s burdens. Men who are awake to the kingdom of God while much of the world is still asleep.

CHRISTIAN MEN SHOULD BE WOKE.

No, not in the way the world says. Scripture repeatedly tells believers to wake up, stay alert, keep watch, and be sober-minded. Jesus tells His disciples, “Watch and pray.” Paul tells the church that the hour has come to wake from sleep. Fourth Watch is a call for men to become spiritually awake in a world that constantly invites us to coast.

So yes, Get woke. Set your alarm for 3:30.

You can always think of a reason not to come. It is too early. You are tired. You have work tomorrow. You are not really a morning person. Neither are most of us at 3:30 AM. Come anyway.
