Theology Simplified
Theology is not just for scholars, pastors, or professors. Every Christian thinks about God. Every Christian speaks about God. Every Christian lives out some kind of theology. The question is not whether we will do theology, but whether we will do it carefully, biblically, and faithfully.
The goal of this series of articles is to help ordinary Christians think clearly about extraordinary truths. Not to make theology shallow, but to make it accessible. Deep truth does not have to be buried under complicated language. These truths are rich enough to study for a lifetime, but they are also meant to shape the faith, worship, and daily obedience of every believer.
Each article is intentionally kept under 1,000 words. That means these posts will not answer every question or chase every rabbit trail. Instead, they are designed to give a clear starting point, a biblical framework, and a few thoughtful questions for further reflection and conversation.
The hope is that these articles will help you: Understand the major doctrines of the Christian faith in plain language. See how theology is rooted in Scripture, not speculation. Recognize how each doctrine points us to Christ. Grow in worship, humility, confidence, and obedience. Because theology is about knowing the living God truly, loving Him rightly, and learning to see all of life in light of His glory.
Introduction: What Is Theology?
Scripture and Revelation
- Revelation – The invisible God has chosen to make himself known to his creation.
- What is the Bible? – Why do Christians care so much about an old book?
- Biblical Authority – Why the Bible is not merely helpful but final.
God the Father – Theology Proper
- God Is Creator – God is uncreated, distinct from creation, and the maker of all things.
- God Is King – God rules over all He has made, and His judgment is not a contradiction of His love but an expression of His holy goodness.
- God is Holy – God is holy, perfectly pure, infinitely glorious, and utterly set apart from all evil.
- God is Merciful – The holy God comes near to sinners with patience, compassion, steadfast love, and saving grace.
- God is Triune – One God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is not a puzzle to solve, but the foundation of Christian worship.
Humanity and The Problem
- Made in God’s Image – Human dignity, vocation, relationships, and the sanctity of life.
- Created for Worship – Humanity was made to know, love, glorify, and enjoy God.
- The Fall – Sin, rebellion, death, corruption, and why the Bible’s diagnosis is deeper than “people make mistakes.”
- The Seriousness of Sin – Sin is not merely brokenness, weakness, or mistake. It is rebellion against God, corruption within us, and ruin around us.
- Covenant People – There are certain people who seem to have a closer relationship to God than others. What’s up with that?
- Covenant Failure – The Bible does not paint the “people of God” in a very good light.
Jesus Christ the Son
- What is the Christ? – Christ isn’t Jesus’ last name. The whole Bible points towards this office in lots of different ways.
- Who Is Jesus? – Fully God, fully man, the eternal Son who took on flesh.
- The Life and Obedience of Christ – Jesus did not merely die for sinners. He lived in perfect righteousness as the true Son, true Israel, and true Adam.
- The Cross of Christ – Atonement, substitution, sacrifice, victory, and reconciliation.
- The Resurrection and New Creation – The resurrection is not merely proof that Jesus is alive. It is the beginning of new creation.
- The Ascension and Reign of Christ – Jesus is not absent. He is enthroned, interceding, ruling, and reigning until all His enemies are placed under His feet.
Salvation
- What Is the Gospel? – The good news of Christ’s kingdom, cross, resurrection, forgiveness, and grace.
- Saved by Grace – Election, calling, regeneration, faith, repentance, justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification introduced simply as the whole work of God in salvation.
- Justification – How guilty sinners are declared righteous in Christ.
- Adoption – God does not merely pardon sinners. He brings them into His family as beloved sons and daughters in Christ.
- Sanctification – How God makes His people holy, not by self-improvement but by union with Christ and the work of the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit
- The Spiritual World – There is a whole other realm of existence that exists alongside the physical realm that the Bible assumes you are tracking with.
- Who Is the Holy Spirit? – Not an impersonal force, but God Himself dwelling with and in His people.
- The Spirit’s Work – The Spirit gives life, illumines Scripture, produces fruit, strengthens faith, convicts of sin, and conforms believers to Christ.
- Spiritual Gifts – This is more than just innate talents. There are gifts given to the church for mutual edification.
The Church
- What Is the Church? – The people of God, the body of Christ, the temple of the Spirit.
- Baptism – Sign, seal, identification with Christ, and entrance into the visible covenant community.
- The Lord’s Supper – Remembrance, proclamation, communion with Christ, and hope until He comes.
- Christian Worship – Word, prayer, singing, giving, confession, fellowship, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and covenant renewal.
- Personal Piety – Prayer, Quiet Time, Bible Study, and Christian Living
- Discipleship – Jesus told his apostles before he ascended to heaven to go and make disciples.
- Missions – Why do we feel compelled to go into all the world to try to convert people to Christianity?
Last Things
- The Last Enemy – Death comes for all? Why do Christians die?
- Heaven and Hell – What happens after death? How much does the Bible share?
- Christ’s Return – Jesus is coming back. Are you ready?
- Resurrection and New Creation – Because Jesus is Risen he promised we will be too.
- Eternity – The eternal uncreated God has invited his people to dwell with Him forever!
