This week feels strangely quiet. After a busy summer and the beginning of a new school year, there aren’t a dozen announcements fighting for space in this newsletter. Upward Flag Football plays its first game this Saturday. Wednesday nights continue. Groups meet. People pray. The Word is taught. Meals are shared. And the ordinary life of the church keeps moving, and that isn’t a bad thing.

Most of the life of a church happens in weeks that never make the history books. Faithfulness usually looks remarkably ordinary while we are living it. People show up. Someone teaches a child. Someone else notices a visitor. A meal gets carried to a family. A prayer is whispered for a hurting friend. A coach learns the names of a few kids on a football field. And Sunday after Sunday, the people of God gather again.

Next month, Redeemer will celebrate 116 years as a church, and I suspect most of those 116 years were built out of weeks a lot like this one. So enjoy the quiet. Keep showing up. Keep loving one another. Keep serving. Keep praying. God does an awful lot of His work in what looks to us like “ordinary time.”

Upcoming Events

Upward Flag Football Games begin Tomorrow!

Our season-opening game is tomorrow, Saturday, September 19 at 8:30 AM! Come out, grab a spot on the sideline, and help us cheer on the kids as we kick off the season together.

Practices will continue on Thursday evenings at 5:30 PM. Please pray for our players, coaches, families, and volunteers as we use this season to encourage kids, build relationships with families, and point them toward Christ.

The Path of Citrus County

This Sunday we are excited to welcome DuWayne Sipper the Executive Director of The Path of Citrus County to worship with us and to hear a little more about their ministry to our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

The Path is a Christian rescue mission serving men, women, and families in our area. Their work goes beyond providing a safe place to sleep or a meal to eat. They seek to help people rebuild their lives through a Christ-centered environment, individualized support, life and job skills, recovery programs, and opportunities to develop the stability needed to move toward independent living. Christ is at the heart of their mission and their desire to see lives genuinely transformed.

That makes their visit more than an announcement about another organization. These are people serving some of the most vulnerable members of the same community God has placed around us. As we hear from them Sunday, listen for ways we can pray, encourage, give, and perhaps even serve alongside them.

The Path is also celebrating 25 years of ministry this year, and they will mark that milestone with their Harvest of Hope Banquet and Celebration on Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 PM. Maguire State Missions Offering

Every September, Florida Baptists join together for the Maguire State Mission Offering. This year’s theme is “Immeasurably More,” and every dollar given through the offering goes directly toward planting new churches in Florida through Send Network Florida.

Florida is growing rapidly, and every new neighborhood, apartment complex, and community represents people who need to hear the good news of Jesus. We may never meet the church planters or sit in the churches our gifts help launch, but we can stand beside them through prayer and generous giving. The statewide goal is $1 million, and every dollar collected goes straight to church planters.

Fourth Watch – Fridays – 0400

Every Friday morning at 4 AM, men gather for Fourth Watch, a time to seek the Lord before the noise and responsibilities of the day begin.

There’s no breakfast, no entertainment, and no elaborate program. We’ll open the Bible, talk honestly, and spend serious time in prayer for four things. For the Lord’s guidance, for our own hearts, for one another, and for our families. Bring your Bible. Come looking for the Lord.

Fourth Watch is open not only to the men of Redeemer, but to Christian men throughout our community who want brothers who will encourage them, challenge them, and help them keep watch over the things God has entrusted to them.

October is going to be a special month at Redeemer. This year marks the 116th anniversary of our church. Think about that for a moment. For more than a century, generations of believers have gathered here to sing, pray, hear the Word, baptize new believers, raise children, send missionaries, care for neighbors, and proclaim the same good news of Jesus Christ. Buildings have changed. Pastors have come and gone. Families have arrived, grown, moved away, and sometimes returned. But through all of it, God has remained faithful.

We have much to be thankful for. So as we enter October, we are going to spend six weeks in the Psalms building a theology of gratitude. Our new sermon series, Give Thanks: Six Psalms for a Grateful People, will help us consider not merely what we are thankful for, but why thanksgiving is such a fundamental part of the life of God’s people.

Give Faithfully

The Bridge

Last week we left Jesus on the mountain with twelve ordinary men whom He had called to Himself. Mark tells us why He chose them: “that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.” They would go because Jesus sent them. They would preach because Jesus gave them a message. And remarkably, they would exercise authority over unclean spirits because Jesus gave them authority. The Twelve were not being introduced to some secret technique for spiritual warfare. They were being commissioned as representatives of a King whose authority they had already watched the demons recognize.

That authority is precisely what becomes controversial when Jesus comes down from the mountain. The scribes arrive from Jerusalem and cannot simply dismiss what He is doing. Demons really are being driven out. Lives really are being reclaimed. Something powerful is happening in Galilee. So they offer another explanation: “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and, “By the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” They see the authority of Jesus clearly enough; what they get catastrophically wrong is its source.

Jesus responds with a picture. You cannot rob a strong man’s house while the strong man is standing there guarding it. If you are carrying his possessions out the front door, something must have happened first: someone stronger has entered the house and bound him. That, Jesus says, is what you are watching. Satan is not cooperating with Jesus. Satan is being defeated by Him. The kingdom of darkness is not voluntarily giving up its captives. The stronger Man has come.

And suddenly the calling of the Twelve makes even more sense. Jesus has called these men to Himself and now sends them into the strong man’s house with His authority. They can preach good news and cast out demons because the victory does not depend upon their strength. The authority belongs to Jesus. They simply go where their King sends them and do what their King has authorized them to do. The fishermen on the mountain are about to become participants in the plundering of the enemy’s house.

That remains wonderfully good news for the church. We do not go into the world because we are particularly strong, clever, impressive, or courageous. We go because Jesus has authority. We proclaim freedom to captives because the stronger Man has come. The church does not advance by manufacturing spiritual power of its own. We follow Jesus into territory He has already claimed, announcing that the King has come and that the reign of sin, death, and the devil will not have the final word.

Weekly Life Together

Wednesday Night Dinner, Kids, and Prayer

Join us each Wednesday evening as we gather for a shared family meal and time together.

Sunday Morning Bible Study and Worship

Sundays at 9:30am is our Bible Study hour. From children to adults, each class is focused on helping us grow in understanding of God’s word and encouraging one another to live out our faith.

Then at 10:45am, we come together for corporate worship as one body. Our aim is simple: to humble ourselves before the throne of Jesus our King and to joyfully worship Him side by side as families. Kids and adults all share in this time as we sit under the same truth and fix our eyes on Christ together. Check out this playlist of some of the music that we will sing together in worship.

Breaking Bread Groups

Throughout the week, we gather in homes to discuss God’s Word and to pray for each other as we do life together. We currently have groups that meet on Sunday afternoons, as well as Tuesday and Thursday nights. If you are interested in joining or starting a group, please talk to someone in leadership.
